Low-substituted Hydroxypropyl Cellulose (L-HPC)

MIKEM L-HPC Description

MIKEM Low-substituted Hydroxypropyl Cellulose (L-HPC) is a non-ionic, white or white crystalline powder. It is made of alkali cellulose etherified with propylene oxide. It is insoluble in water and organic solvents (acetone, ethanol, etc.), but can swell rapidly in water. The degrees of swelling varies with the hydroxypropyl content. It is not affected by the alkalinity or acidity of gastrointestinal fluid and is specially manufactured as an additive for tablet production.

The structure contains a large number of hydrophilic groups, a vast inner surface, and porosity. Therefore, it has fast moisture absorption and strong swelling (much stronger than starch). It is also a preferred disintegrant agent for tablets. It can accelerate the tablet disintegration and make the dispersed particle size of the thin tablet thinner, which can accelerate the dissolution rate. Its rough structure can enhance the boundary strength, thereby improving the tablet hardness and surface integrity and brightness.
